2023 NHL ALL STAR GAME PREVIEW AND ODDS
The NHL All-Star Game’s unique format is back for 2023, as each of the four divisions will square off in a single-elimination tournament to crown the top division in hockey. This will be the seventh edition of the current format.
2023 NHL All-Star Game Preview and Odds: Central and Atlantic arrive as the favorites
The event takes place from the FLA Live Arena in Sunrise, Florida, which is the home of the Florida Panthers, on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 3 p.m. Eastern time. Of the six prior versions, the Metropolitan and Pacific Divisions have each won three times, whereas the Atlantic and Central Divisions are looking for their first victory.
Atlantic Division Overview
The Atlantic Division is home to three of the top-six teams in hockey: the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Tampa Bay Lightning. The team is represented by 2020 ASG MVP David Pasternak (BOS), Auston Matthews (TOR), and Nikita Kucherov (TB) along with Matthew Tkachuk of the host Florida Panthers. This team could also have the top goaltender duo in Boston’s Linus Ullmark and the Lightning’s Andrei Vasilevskiy.
Metropolitan Division Overview
Veterans Alexander Ovechkin (Washington) and 2019 ASG MVP Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh) lead this squad along with rising star Jack Hughes (New Jersey), who is an MVP candidate. Other notables include Johnny Gaudreau (Columbus), Brock Nelson (NY Islanders), and Adam Fox (NY Rangers). Igor Shesterkin (NYR) and Ilya Sorokin (NYI) will man the net.
Central Division Overview
Despite sitting tied for the final playoff spot in the West at the moment, defending Stanley Cup champion Colorado has three players on this team: Cal Makar, Mikko Rantanen, and Nathan MacKinnon. Upstart teams Dallas (Jason Robertson) and Winnipeg (Josh Morrissey and goaltender Connor Hellebuyck) are represented as well. The other goalie is Nashville’s Juuse Saros.
Pacific Division Overview
NHL MVP favorite Connor McDavid of Edmonton leads the Pacific team along with Nazem Kadri of Calgary and San Jose’s Erik Karlsson. Bo Horvat was traded from Vancouver to the Islanders but will still play for the Pacific team. Goalies for the Pacific squad are Logan Thompson of Vegas and Edmonton’s Stuart Skinner.
2023 NHL All Star Game Preview and Odds: Format
The two divisions from the Eastern and Western Conferences meet in games that consist of two 10-minute halves. Just three players and a goaltender are on the ice for all games. Overtime, if needed, consists of a three-round shootout followed by extra rounds as needed.
The winners of each matchup then play against each other under the same format to crown the All-Star Game champion.
2023 NHL All-Star Game: Prediction
Pasternak and Kucherov each have 72 points and are on pace for well over 100. Matthews and Mitch Marner of Toronto have also combined for 113 points. Plus, the goaltending duo will be tough to beat.
The Central Division is favored over the Pacific, but the Pacific has three of the top-10 scorers in the NHL. McDavid has 92 points and leads the NHL in overtime goals since 2015-16, so we like the upset in this round.
For the overall winner, the Atlantic is the most well-rounded, has the home-team Tkachuk along with brother Brady Tkachuk (Ottawa) as well, so we’re taking the Atlantic to win its first All-Star Game under the current format.
